Cuartel de Ballajá

Cuartel de Ballaja

El Cuartel de Ballajá was built in 1864 by the Spanish troops established in the island of Puerto Rico.

In World War II, the barracks were used as a hospital for troops.

On August 31, 1944, the War Department of the United States issued General Order No. 71.  This order renamed the hospital to Rodriguez General Hospital, in honor of Major Fernando E. Rodríguez Vargas, an odontologist, scientist and a Major in the U.S. Army who discovered the bacteria that causes dental caries.

This important landmark was built for military purposes and has evolved as a cultural center.
